Relaxing and remote, Los Frailes is widely considered one of the most spectacular beaches along the Pacific coastline, and it’s easy to see why: pristine waters and a perfect crescent-shaped beach flanked by terracotta cliffs against a backdrop of lush, forested hills. You can also trek 3.2 km (2 mi) to the darker sand beach, which offers good snorkeling. The Machalilla National Park entrance fee includes Los Frailes, and many people maximize their ticket by exploring Isla de la Plata and Los Frailes. If you decide to just visit the beach, you’ll still have to shell out $12 cash for the park entrance fee. From Puerto López you can visit the beach through a guided tour or better on your own. Take a bus or a return taxi ride from Puerto Lopez costs $10 and avoids an unpleasant 40-minute hike along the road.
